SOME TERMS TO BE KNOWN TO DEAL WITH KINEMATICS

Distance: It is described as path length of an object I.e.,total path travelled by an object. It is scalar quantity.

Displacement : It is shortest distance covered by an object. It is vector quantity.

Speed: It is the ratio of distance travelled by time of journey. Mathematically it can be represented as dx/dt (calculus concept) . You will study in upcoming posts. Speed is a scalar quantity.

Velocity: It is the ratio of displacement to time of journey. It is also mathematically stated as dx/dt. It is vector quantity.

Acceleration : It is the ratio of change in velocity to time of journey. It is mathematically represented as dv/dt where dv is change of velocity and dt is time of journey. It is vector quantity.

RECTILINEAR MOTION :

Recti means straight. Hence rectilinear motion means Motion along straight line . Note that rectilinear motion need not be 1dimension necessarily.

INTRODUCTION TO MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION

Mechanics is a branch of physics which deals with behaviour of an object.Mechanics is classified to kinematics and dynamics.Kinematics deals with how objects move? and Dynamics deals with why objects move?.Kinematics is further divided into translational motion and rotational motion . Translational motion deals with change of position and rotational motion deals with motion around an axis . Translational motion is further grouped into one,two and three dimensional motion. Now let me discuss about one dimensional motion An object is said to be in motion if its position changes with time.... Hence motion in one dimension means change of position with time only along a particular direction i.e.,only along single dimension. It may be noted that all straight line motion is not one dimensional motion but a straight line motion may be one dimensional motion.
